Life is worth the fight.
Why is life worth living?
When Viktor Frankl used to work with people who were deeply suffering and considering suicide, he would sometimes ask a highly provocative and startling question: “Why haven’t you done it yet?”
It was jarring and unsettling to hear, but it would challenge the person to reflect. And what he consistently found was that people did not want to die, they were just losing hope after so much pain. But the fact that they hadn’t done it meant they still had hope for a better future. They would start to name the things that were important to them, the people they cared about, and the things that were still good. The shift in orientation and mindset offered an opening.
Of course, there are many necessary ways to help someone through this kind of despair, but sometimes reconnecting with that kernel of hope is enough to keep us waking up another day with the aspiration to find a way through.
Life is worth the fight.
